WHEN IS AN IMPLANT AN OPTION?
Implants are the ideal solution for many situations when a single tooth, several teeth, or all teeth are missing. Even for large gaps in the teeth, a fixed dental restoration using implants is possible.
Dental implants can be used at any age. The exception is children and adolescents who are still growing.
Certain diseases and heavy cigarette smoking can also be contraindications for implant treatment.
WHY IS AN IMPLANT
THE BEST ALTERNATIVE?
Function and esthetics
Bone is a vital or living system. This means that when there is no biting pressure, the bone is slowly lost (atrophy). An implant counteracts this loss because it has a great side effect: it trains the jaw bone. This helps to preserve the bone and gums over the long term. An implant most closely resembles nature in terms of function and esthetics.
Comfort
A restoration with implants feels completely natural in the mouth. Talking, laughing, eating, kissing – with implants the most natural things in life are possible without any restrictions. Implants offer the greatest comfort even with fixed or removable dentures: The restoration sits softly on the gum, and it can be easily cleaned and cared for.
Investment
The common belief that dental implants are an expensive solution is soon put into perspective when the lifetime of an implant treatment is considered. Scientific studies verify the longevity of implants with optimal care and regular checkups. A high-quality implant treatment is thus a long-term investment in the future of your dental health.
SAFETY
Implants are an established therapy. For more than 30 years it has been a safe and recognized method of treatment. As a result of continued research, the success rates nowadays are as high as 97 percent.
WHAT DOES AN IMPLANTATION INVOLVE?
Every implant treatment consists of five steps – regardless of whether only a single tooth needs to be replaced or whether extensive restoration is required:
> Starting the procedureSTEP 1 – DIAGNOSIS
To determine the right treatment, your dentist will assess your initial situation. Individual case planning is based on:
- single X-ray images
- panoramic X-ray images (orthopantomogram)
- models
- specific functional tests where necessary
- cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) where necessary
- computed tomography (CT) where necessary
As part of these examinations, alternative treatment options are considered.
Ask about the benefits and drawbacks as well as any risks. Your dentist will discuss these with you and make an informed decision about which solution is best in your case.
STEP 2 – PREPARATION
For an implant treatment that is successful in the long term, the following preliminary treatments may be needed depending on the situation:
- elimination of caries or gingival pockets
- orthodontic tooth correction
- bone augmentation
As part of these examinations, alternative treatment options are considered.
Your active cooperation during this phase means that you can make a big contribution to the success of the implant treatment.
STEP 3 – IMPLANTATION
The initial stable connection to the bone, known as the primary stability, is already established at the moment of implantation. During the healing phase – the weeks after the implantation – increasing numbers of bone growth cells attach to the implant surface. This process is referred to as osseointegration.
Modern anesthetic and implantation methods ensure that nowadays the procedure is as gentle as possible. The time needed can vary greatly and depends on the number of implants and the individual situation.
After the implantation, you will be given an implant record in which the implant used is documented and can be traced.
STEP 4 – INSERTION
After the dental implant is inserted, it takes a few months until the bone cells are joined to the implant and it has healed. If needed, you will be given a temporary solution. In the meantime, your new teeth will be fabricated by the dental technician.
After checking the function and the esthetic outcome, the dental restoration can be inserted. Now the new teeth are fully functional and can be loaded.
STEP 5 – CARE
Like natural teeth, implant restorations also need to be thoroughly cared for. Otherwise, gum inflammations and gum pockets can develop. These could damage the implants in the long run. As well as daily oral hygiene, professional teeth cleaning (PTC) in the dental practice is therefore the best investment you can make to ensure the durability of your implants.
Your dentist will give you detailed information about caring for your implant, about cleaning aids and how to use them. Regular checkups will help to ensure the long-term success of your implant.
IMPLANT TREATMENT
MEANS TEAMWORK
If the dentist does not perform the implantation, he or she will consult a specialized dentist, oral surgeon, or orthodontic surgeon and plan the course of the treatment in detail.
The dentist and the implant specialist will determine possible treatment alternatives and discuss a recommendation for the best solution. Involving the dental technician in the early stages of planning is very useful.
The dental technician tailors his or her work to the individual conditions and focuses on function, esthetics, and phonetics. For the most natural appearance, the shape, color, luminescence, and opacity of the dental restoration are appropriately designed.
This complex work has a critical effect on the appearance of the treatment result. After a healing phase lasting several months, the high-quality and customized dental restoration is inserted.
